The map show above, was produced by Howard Hyland, one of the outstanding race directors in the 1980's. The map identifies way points which were reference points for the radio operators when reporting competitor positions (and accidents) during the race. Other race directors have included Dianne Wahlich (Soccer Club), Craig Ross (Sport Bay of Plenty) and, more recently, Dennis Jackson (Kawerau Harrier Club).

The race will start at Firmin Field, Waterhouse St. Kawerau. The route up and down the mountain is marked, and you must go through the checkpoint at the top of the mountain.
The summit of Putauaki (Pu = mound; tauaki = high point) (Mt Edgecumbe) is 2796 ft above sea level. Runners are usually too busy to take in the amazing view of the Bay of Plenty. The present day turn around point is slightly below the highest point as situated near the southern transmission mast. Many wear gloves during the steep descent, some runners literally becoming airborne and almost out of control, dodging sharp rocks and leaping over wild pig excavations as they hurtle downhill.
